The thing about having a photography career is that each day presents a unique set of challenges and experiences, making it an unpredictable yet thrilling path. When I received the assignment to photograph for Cummins Emissions at the Darlington plant, I approached it with the same enthusiasm and professionalism that I bring to every job. However, this particular request stood out because I was tasked with capturing images from a high vantage point, which added an extra layer of excitement—and a touch of apprehension—to the day.
As I arrived at the Darlington plant, the atmosphere buzzed with activity. Workers were busy at their stations, machinery hummed in the background, and the scent of industrial operations filled the air. I took a moment to familiarise myself with the layout of the plant and the specific areas I would be focusing on for my shoot. The request for high-angle shots meant I would need to ascend to a platform that would give me a comprehensive view of the operations below, showcasing both the machinery and the workforce in action.
While I don't mind heights in general, I must admit that this particular lift was a bit wobbly, adding an element of uncertainty to my ascent. As I rode up, I felt the gentle sway of the platform beneath me, which was a reminder of the importance of safety in such environments. I took a deep breath, reminding myself that this was all part of the job—a job that I truly loved. The view from the top was breathtaking, offering a panoramic perspective of the plant's intricate workings.
Once I reached the desired height, I set up my camera and began to capture the essence of the plant. The challenge was to convey the scale of the operations while also focusing on the details that made Cummins Emissions a leader in the industry. I adjusted my lens to frame the shots perfectly, ensuring that I highlighted not just the machinery but also the dedicated individuals who operated them. Each click of the shutter was a step toward telling the story of innovation and teamwork that defined the company.
As I worked, I found myself reflecting on the unpredictability of a photography career. One day, I might be shooting a serene landscape, while the next could involve navigating the heights of an industrial site. This variety keeps the work fresh and invigorating, reminding me that every assignment is an opportunity to explore new perspectives and capture moments that might otherwise go unnoticed.
In the end, despite the wobbly lift and the challenges of shooting from above, I was able to produce a series of dynamic images that truly represented the spirit of Cummins Emissions at the Darlington plant. It was all in a day's work, and as I descended back to solid ground, I felt a sense of accomplishment. Each assignment, with its unique demands and experiences, adds to my journey as a photographer, shaping my skills and enriching my portfolio in ways I could never have anticipated.
