I’ve often considered adding the editing and processing of images I take on a shoot as an extra cost! This thought arises from the realisation that the time and effort required for post-production can be substantial, especially when dealing with a large volume of images. The meticulous nature of editing demands not only technical skills but also a creative eye to ensure that the final images truly reflect the vision and quality expected by clients.

It takes a day, if not more, when there are lots of images to process from a big shoot. For instance, in the case of a 4-hour photo commission on location, where I might capture around 600 photos, the processing time can easily extend to 10 hours or even longer. This extensive editing process involves several steps, including sorting through the raw images, selecting the best shots, and making adjustments to enhance their quality. Each image requires careful attention to detail, from color correction and exposure adjustments to cropping and retouching. It’s a labour-intensive process that is essential to delivering high-quality results that meet professional standards.

Moreover, the editing phase is not just about making images look good; it’s about ensuring that they convey the intended message or emotion. A skilled photographer understands the importance of storytelling through their images, and post-processing plays a crucial role in achieving that narrative. Whether it’s adjusting the contrast to create a dramatic effect or softening the tones for a more romantic feel, each decision in the editing process contributes to the overall impact of the photograph.

In the competitive field of photography, the ability to produce stunning, polished images is what sets a professional apart from an amateur. Therefore, incorporating the editing and processing time as an added service charge is not only reasonable but also reflects the value of the work that goes into each project. Clients should be aware that the final images they receive are the result of both the initial shoot and the extensive post-production efforts that follow, which are vital for achieving the highest quality outcomes.
