A folio of photographs taken in America from 1987 to 1994.
The photographic images were taken on 35mm black & white film and printed on fine art bromide paper.
In those times, photographers relied heavily on the use of film, a medium that was inherently light-sensitive and required careful processing to yield negatives. These negatives served as the foundation for creating photographic prints, capturing moments in time with a level of detail and texture that is often cherished by both artists and viewers alike. Using a Nikon FM2, a camera renowned for its reliability and precision, Chris embarked on an extensive journey across the United States. His travels spanned from the sun-kissed landscapes of California to the bustling streets of New York City, with stops in picturesque locations such as Belfast in Maine, known for its charming coastal views, and the vibrant, culturally rich atmosphere of New Orleans in the deep south. Throughout this journey, he meticulously documented the diverse scenes and experiences he encountered, capturing the essence of each location through his lens.
Upon returning to the UK, Chris dedicated himself to the intricate process of developing the film in his darkroom, a space filled with the tools of his trade and the faint smell of photographic chemicals. This process involved several stages, including the careful handling of the film to avoid any unwanted light exposure, as well as the precise timing required for each chemical bath. After processing, he sifted through the array of images he had captured, selecting those that resonated most strongly with his artistic vision. Each chosen photograph was then prepared for printing, with the largest print size achievable using his photographic enlarger being an impressive 20×24 inches. This size allowed for a significant level of detail to be showcased, particularly when using high-quality, fibre-based double-weight bromide paper, known for its exceptional tonal range and durability.
The original prints, a testament to Chris's skill and dedication, are now available for sale, offering collectors and enthusiasts the opportunity to own a piece of this artistic journey. Each print not only represents a moment frozen in time but also embodies the passion and craftsmanship that went into its creation.
Here is a selection of the photographs on show at the digital gallery, where viewers can explore the rich narratives and striking visuals captured during Chris's travels. Each image tells its own story, drawing the viewer into the unique atmosphere of the locations and experiences that inspired them. View more: Gallery
